Garden Associates Landscape Architecture, Inc. Receives NJLCA Award of Excellence for Commercial Renovation . SOMERVILLE, NJ, December 18, 2008 - Garden Associates Landscape Architecture, Inc. would like to take this opportunity to announce the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association’s recognition of Garden Associates’ Jersey City Intensive Green Roof Project. Receiving the Award of Excellence for Commercial Renovation over $100,000.00 was truly an awesome HOLIDAY GIFT for our entire team. We are proud of all of our projects and personally think they are all deserving of an award. We are eagerly awaiting continued success in the New Year and we look forward to the potential for exciting collaborations. The NJLCA Achievement Awards program is designed to reward landscape professionals who execute quality landscaping projects. The renovation project, Portofino in Jersey City, NJ, previously existed as a rental apartment building with an attached parking garage. The 9 year old ½ acre roof top of the 5 story parking garage contained a swimming pool, patio, inappropriate shade trees that where flying off the roof at a rate of one a year, but little else. The project has recently transitioned to an ownership complex with approximately 500 residents. Garden Associates Landscape Architecture, based in Somerville, NJ, was enlisted to transform the existing roof space into a lush intensive “Green Roof”. The swimming pool remains, but any connection to the past stops there. The “Green Materials” utilized consist of native plantings, lawn and native stone. Raised beds are now filled with lush green plantings and colorful flowers. Green lawn and stepping stone paths provide a cohesive connection between the designed outdoor spaces. A resident can lounge pool side, prepare and enjoy a meal at the outdoor kitchen, stroll through the garden, play with there children on the play equipment and so on. Careful consideration was also given to what the eye does not see. For instance, beneath the surface lies an intricate system of drainage tiles that captures run off. The new lawn and plantings utilize a large amount of water, however, effectively reducing runoff in comparison to the pre-existing conditions. The Portofino “Green Roof” provides a valuable outdoor space for its residents while also being environmentally responsible.
